Three Griffins say goodbye, GR welcomes back D-Mac...

The Grand Rapids Griffins roster situation finally came to a head. The team had carried twenty-six players for much of the season, but could only dress twenty for any given game. That number shrank to 25 with the recall of veteran Landon Wilson to the Dallas Stars (NHL), and stands at 23 after a series of moves this morning. Defenseman PJ Atherton was the first to go, as the team re-assigned him to the Ontario Reign of the ECHL, where he will be reunited with his former coach from last season. The organization also pulled the trigger on a long rumored transaction with permanent press box resident Randall Gelech being recalled by Detroit (NHL) and re-assigned to the Rochester Americans (AHL). The parent Wings also recalled center Darren Helm, who is scheduled to play tonight against Montreal, and assigned fan favorite Darren McCarty to Grand Rapids. Helm is expected to return in a few days, but no word as to the length of McCarty's stay in the AHL.
