The defending Stanley Cup champs break camp with largely the same cast as the previous season, missing only the retired Dallas Drake and Dominic Hasek. Newcomer Marian Hossa has drawn most of the focus during the offseason, but Finish League Star Ville Leino is a dark horse to fly in under the radar and take a job. The other big story in camp is the depth at defense, with 10 legitimate NHL defenders fighting for 8 spots on the blueline in Detroit. This camp also features a large crop of talented rookie pros, led by Cory Emmerton, Justin Abdelkader and Jan Mursak who are expected to start the season in Grand Rapids (AHL).
Their are 63 players expected in camp, made up of 35 forwards, 22 defenseman and 6 netminders. Thirty-one players in camp were Wings draft picks, although McCarty and Osgood both left the organization and were brought back as free agents. Fourteen players on the roster were acquired as free agents, four through trades, and eight are in camp as tryouts. In addition each level of the Detroit farm system is allowed to bring players to camp, with two slots from both Port Huron (IHL) and Flint (IHL), and 5 players from Grand Rapids (AHL). The players range in size from 5'9 (Foreman, Lebda, Haydar) to 6'4 (Kolasau, Ericsson) and weight from 165lbs (Foreman, Thornton) to 220lbs (Lilja, Franzen). |
