Red Wings Sign A Pair For Griffins
Depth players shore up AHL roster...

The Detroit Red Wings have signed two unrestricted free agents to bolster a soon to be depleted AHL roster in Grand Rapids. Center Matt Hussey, a 6'2", 211 pound center from New Haven, CT, split last season between Wilkes-Barre (AHL) and the parent Penguins. The fifth year pro notched career highs with 21 goals and 30 assist in 65 games, and managed an assist in 9 games for Pittsburgh. A grinding winger, the 27 year old Hussey has good size, but doesn't always use it, he is an energy player with great wheels along the same lines as the departed Nate DiCasmirro.

The second signing targets the Griffins' Achilles hill last season, the blueline. Defenseman Dan Smith is an 11 year pro who signed from the Edmonton Oilers organization. A 6'3, 215 pound defensive defenseman, Smith spent most of the season in Hamilton (AHL) where he rang up 16 assists in 69 games, but also saw action in 7 games for the Oilers. The 29 year old British Columbia Native also posted an impressive +11 last year for an abysmal Hamilton club.

Terms of the two contracts have not been announced yet.
