Personal:
Plus: Sees the game well... Elite wrist shot and one timer... Quick release with velocity... Plays with an edge... Capable of bulling his way to the net to create a scoring chance... A fierce forechecker... Known as an agitator... creative player with great hands...
Minus: Skating needs improvement... Defensive game not a strength... Inconsistent... Agitating style sometimes results in bad penalties...
Organizational Comments: Jiri Fischer - Wings Director of Player Development: Every shift, he works, works, works, He really can finish. He's got a good shot. He can play the point on the power play. He can find loose pucks around the net. He's relentless on the forecheck.
What GRC says: 2016-17 The gifted sniper ran into injury problems in the latter part of season and into the playoffs. He did not look completely healed when he did get back in the lineup and his devastating shot was used much more sparingly, as he notched only 5 goals. Frk did a better job of cutting down on bad penalties and played more disciplined. While he continues to improve aspects of his game, he remains a devastating powerplay shooter who can get his high-velocity shot off from almost anywhere and on net. Signed for another season, he will have another kick at the can at training camp.
2015-16 While Frk's torrid offensive pace slowed a bit in the second half, he still put together an impressive season, finishing 6th in the AHL in goals (27), 5th in powerplay goals (11) and 10th in shots (193). He followed that up by scoring a point per game in the opening round of the playoffs before being sidelined by an injury. He has improved his compete level and was an impact player, especially on the powerplay where he teamed well with fellow shooter Ryan Sproul on the points. He still has some things to work on including consistency and play away from the puck and needs to cut down on the bad penalties quite a few of which were retaliatory or when he gets beat defensively. He picked a great season to breakout as he now has to pass through waivers to be assigned to AHL, something unlikely to happen, and a strong camp could very well lead to playing time in Detroit or another NHL team.
2014-15 While much improved over last season, Frk just did not seem to be able to steal a regular spot in the lineup. He spent a lot of the season in the ECHL where he found his scoring touch and put up big numbers. During his stints in the AHL he showed more intensity and a higher compete level, and was much more willing to go to the scrums and win the board battles. This season is a big one for the talented winger, a new coach, some time in the weight room and a little consistency would go a long way.
2013-14 Frk took a step forward from a disastrous first half, even earning a regular spot in the lineup for a while. He remains a work in progress, and has several areas to improve, most notably his skating. He did however show off a nice nose for the net, and an ability to win battles along the boards with his determination. An off-season of hard work would benefit Martin, and make the difference between being a prospect or a suspect.
Fall 2013 Frk is a power forward with an elite shot and good size. He is tough to play against because he uses his size and strength well and is abrasive. He needs to shore up his defensive game and keep working on his quickness, but should be an exciting player to watch.
Role: Scoring Forward
Projection: NHL Top 6 Forward
