What GRC says: Spring 2016 Renouf had a brief audition late in the season after finishing up at the U of Maine. The stocky defenseman showed a physical edge, but needs to gain confidence and quickness. He should be in the fight for a spot on the Griffins blueline next season but it would not be a surprise to see him spend some time in Toledo (ECHL).
2016-17 Renouf finished off an impressive rookie season as a stay at home blueliner for the Griffins. He showed off a knack for defensive positioning and seemed to be in the right place at the right time more often than not. This is good, because foot speed might be the biggest area he needs to improve, not necessarily laterally but chasing down puck carriers, he is good but not great. A rugged player who is not afraid to use his size, Renouf will battle for position and is not afraid to drop the gloves when necessary. As the season went on he also showed he is a big game player, raising the level of his play as the stakes went up.
2017-18 After a lackluster first half, Renouf began to play with a little more fire, heating up during the last quarter of the season and into the playoffs to solidify his spot in the top 6. The rugged defender gives you a little bit of everything, but is not a standout in any area. He is at his best when he plays physical and creates turnovers in the neutral zone. Renouf is not afraid to sacrifice the body blocking shots or taking the hit to make a play, but has endeared himself to teammates by being willing to drop the gloves to stick up for them. This summer could be interesting for the restricted free agent as the organization has a crowded blueline in both Grand Rapids and Detroit, but he is expected to be on the Griffins again.
Fall 2021 Renouf returns to the Griffins blueline after a three year absence, counting a Calder Cup with Charlotte and nearly a full season in the NHL to show for his time away. Renouf brings leadership, a steady defensive game and a physical presence.
Role: Defensive Defenseman
Projection: Depth defender
