#3 Alexey Marchenko

Pos: D
D.O.B.: 1/2/92
From: Moscow, Russia
Height: 6'2
Weight: 212
Shoots: Right
Drafted: 2011 draft 7th rnd, 205th overall by Detroit (NHL)
Acquired: Signed 3-year contract with Detroit (NHL) 5/30/13
Personal:
Plus: Reads plays well... Technically sound defenseman... Good one-on-one... Plays physical without taking bad penalties... Good skater both forward and backward... Under-rated passer...
Minus: Needs to work on shot... Must add bulk to frame to play his style... Offensive game has not translated from juniors...
Organizational Comments: Red Wings Head Coach Jeff Blashill: The biggest thing with Marchie is he's extremely smart. He knows how to gap really well. I think he's an elite passer, so he can go back under mega pressure and make passes to break us out of the zone.
What GRC says: 2014-15 For all intents and purposes, Marchenko graduated to the NHL in the second half of last season before being felled by an injury. In his time in Grand Rapids, he looked like an NHL'er, playing airtight defense, and showing off his good first pass. His skating and speed have improved immensely in the last year; he is faster, covers more range and is much more mobile on the backend. His return in the playoffs gave the team a boost and he had clearly elevated his game after experiencing the NHL. He is expected to make the Wings out of camp.
2013-14 Considered the most NHL ready of the blueline prospects, Marchenko did little to change that before being felled by an ankle injury requiring surgery. That Injury may keep the steady defensive defender in the AHL to start the season.
Fall 2013 Marchenko brings a little sandpaper to the Griffins blueline without giving up much in the skill department. He reads plays well which makes him more effective in his own end. A mobile skater with soft hands, Marchenko also brings some grit as evidenced by his big hip checks. Marchenko was a high scoring junior player and is still young enough to offer hope that he can rediscover that game.
Role: Two-way Defenseman
Projection: NHL 4-5 Defenseman
