#12 Andreas Athanasiou
Pos: C/LW
D.O.B.: 8/6/94
From: Woodbridge, Ont
Height: 6'2
Weight: 200
Shoots: Left
Drafted: 2012 draft 4th rnd, 110th overall by Detroit (NHL)
Acquired: Signed to 3-yr contract by Detroit (NHL)11/17/13
Personal:
Plus: Dynamic skater with world class speed... Great hands, can make plays at high speed... Spectacular puckhandler...
Minus: Though improved, has problems with consistency... Needs to get stronger... Defensive game could use some work...
Organizational Comments: Red Wings Asst GM Jim Nill: "He can fly, He's got Darren Helm-type of speed. He was projected as a first-round pick coming in, and at times he showed that. We know there's something there."
What GRC says: 2015-16 Small sample size for the second half as Athanasiou spent most of it in the NHL except for the 2nd round of the playoffs. There is no doubting his offensive skill and speed which he can use to embarrass players with highlight reel goals. He looks to have played his last game in Grand Rapids and is expected to make the wings out of training camp. The one knock on him is that for a player with his skill set and abilities, there is far too much time when you don't notice him. After his NHL performance, he should have been an impact player during the AHL playoffs, and really was not on a regular basis.
2014-15 Athanasiou quickly became a crowd favorite with his end-to-end sojourns, highlighting his high-end speed and sick puck handling skills. A staple on a dangerous Griffins penalty kill, 'Double-A' sometimes seemed to have as many chances as the opponents powerplay. He was sidelined by a broken jaw but persevered through it for the second half of the season. A big game player, Athanasiou has forced his name into the conversation and could surprise many in camp this fall.
Spring 2014 The first thing anyone notices about Athanasiou's game is his skating, both in terms of his blazing fast speed as well as his ability to make plays at speed without slowing down. He had a monster year in the OHL, answering some critics about his consistency and offensive sustainability. Look for him to get some time at the end of the season as he transitions to being a pro player next season.
Role: Scoring Forward
Projection: NHL 3rd Line Center
