57 players are attending the Red Wings 1980 training camp at Cobo Arena in Detroit. 32 forwards, 18 defensemen and seven goaltenders will be working out in preparation for 1980-81 hockey season.
This year, the Red Wings will have a new coach at camp as hockey great Ted Lindsay takes over the coaching reins. Lindsay assumes his new job after three years as General Manager for the Detroit Hockey Club. Hall-of-famer Marcel Pronovost will remain as the wings' assistant coach.
In adition to Lindsay, the Wings will have another rookie coach in camp. Former coach of the Windsor Spitfires (OHA), Wayne Maxner joins the organization as Coach and Director of Player Personnel for the Adirondack Red Wings, Detroit's AHL affiliate in Glens Falls, New York.
During the off-season, Jim Skinner, 37-year veteran with the Wings, was appointed Director of Hockey Operations, and will be assisted by Don Graham. Graham was with Detroit as scout from 1954-72 and with the Atlanta Flames Hockey Club from 1972-80.
On the basis of training camp and pre-season performance, Skinner and Lindsay and their staff will assign players to three different clubs for the coming season. The top players will be selected for the Red Wings' major-league roster, while many of the top young pros needing minor league experience will be assigned to Adirondack of the AHL and Kalamazoo of the IHL. The Red Wings have working agreements with both minor league clubs. Skinner is also considering the possibility of loaning other players to various clubs within the Central Hockey League.
Both Lindsay and Skinner agree that the key to this year's camp will be the... "Kids!" States Skinner. "The players that lacked experience last season will be coming back and are now the full-fledged veterans. We're counting on these kids to carry the load for our younger contingent coming into this 1980 camp. Players like Foligno, Huber, Korn... they're now the VETERANS and we consider them a very important part of our entire camp and organization." |
