| After a COVID-19 shortened season, the Detroit Red Wings opened training camp on 1/1/21 looking to improve on a near record season of futility last year. This year there is no prospects tournament and the AHL season remains a questions mark. Several top prospects remain in Europe for the season after being placed there during the pandemic, including Moritz Seider Joe Veleno and Lucas Raymond. The NHL will be carrying a taxi-squad of extra players to ensure enough to fill in for injuries and illness without having to go outside their bubble. New faces in camp are defenseman Jon Merrill, Troy Stecher and Marc Staal, along with forwards Vlad Namestnikov and Bobby Ryan. The organization is hoping for continued steps forward for young guns like Dylan Larkin, Anthony Mantha, Filip Hronek and Filip Zadina and the emergence of Evgeny Svechnikov, Michael Rasmussen and Dennis Cholowski as full time contributors. There will be opening on the roster this season as long time Red Wings Justin Abdelkader, Jonathan Ericsson and Jimmy Howard will not return.
