Following the conclusion of a disappointing prospects tournament the Detroit Red Wings opened camp at Centre Ice Arena in Traverse City Friday. After missing the playoffs for the first time in 25 years the several changes were expected, while not many of those happened in terms of on-ice talent, one of the biggest changes was in the division of players among the camp teams. In the past the camp was split into several teams containing a mix of veterans, minor leaguers and rookies that competed against each other. This year the three teams had a clear dividing line with Team Delvecchio featuring NHL players and a few others expected to challenge for a spot. Team Howe was comprised of the players earmarked for the Grand Rapids Griffins, while Team Lindsay was mostly made up of junior players and amateur camp tryouts.
Ryan Sproul, recovering from knee surgery, was not cleared to play, and Johan Franzen was physically unable to attend. The most glaring absence from camp however was RFA holdout Andreas Athanasiou, who was holding a KHL contract offer as leverage. In his place were NHL vets David Booth and P.A. Parenteau both attending camp on professional tryouts looking for employment. Newly signed free agents Trevor Dailey and Luke Witkowski made their debut in the winged wheel on day 1 to much fanfare. 1st round draft picks Michael Rasmussen (2017), Dennis Cholowski (2016), and Evgeny Svechnikov (2015) drew a lot of attention and ink, representing the changing of the guard as the team looks to start a new post-season streak.
The organization invited 74 players to camp in 2017, consisting of 41 forwards, 25 defenseman, and 8 netminders. They range in height from 6'6 (Rasmussen) to 5'8 (Joe Hicketts), and in weight from 236 lbs (Dylan McIlrath) to 164 lbs (Filip Hronek).
