2014's Training camp saw a significant shift in the organization's normal methodology as the number of blue chip prospects stole the show and forced several veterans to the back burner. Headlining the cast was rookie phenom Anthony Mantha who followed up a dominant performance in the prospects tournament with a broken leg, taking him out of contention to start the season in Detroit. Darkhorse Andrej Nestrasil playing in his first pre-season after five training camp appearances, showed off his size, speed and soft hands to bypass Mitch Callahan and Landon Ferraro as the last forward standing at the end of camp.
Xavier Ouellet broke away from the pack of exceptional young blueliners, with Alexey Marchenko and Nick Jensen not far behind him after exceptional showings in the exhibition games. Mattias Backman and Ryan Sproul were just a step behind that group and gaining rapidly, putting pressure on the seven defensemen with the parent club. Petr Mrazek was the top performer of the netminders, but is ticketed for another season in the AHL. Camp tryout Joe Hicketts earned a three-year entry level contract with the organization before being returned to his junior team,.
